Tomorrow, February 4, Facebook will celebrate its 10th birthday. This occasion will assuredly result in an outpouring of reflections and praises upon Facebook as it has undeniably shaped everybody’s life throughout its decade of existence.
A decade ago, on February 14, 2004, Mark Zuckerberg launched ‘thefacebook’ from his dorm room at Harvard University so that his fellow students can find an agora to connect with other students of the university. Since then, the social network has exploded all across the planet with more than 1.3 billion people using the site on a monthly basis.
In an industry conference for the Open Compute Project, CEO Mark Zuckerberg gave his thoughts about this momentous milestone for Facebook. In it, he said that back then, he figured that someone someday would build a large and influential social network encompassing the whole planet. It didn’t occur to him though that the said social network would be Facebook itself.
Following a plethora of changes and revamps to keep the website fresh and exciting, Facebook is now better than ever. Sporting redesigned News Feeds, bold graphics and a robust messaging system, it seems like when you talk about connectivity, you can never go wrong with Facebook.
As it has proven time and again, Facebook is about innovation and experimentation. Proof of this comes in the form of the Creative Labs wherein Facebook makes new apps to roll out for the growing multitude of people connected through Facebook Mobile.
Paper, the first app that will be released through Creative Labs, is a magazine-like app for iOS in which aside from the News Feed, a new interface will also feature the latest news and headlines curated from well-known publications such as the New York Times and the Huffington Post. Paper will join the ranks of Instagram and Messenger which are apps from Facebook that has truly changed the playing field for social media.
In conclusion, it looks like the decade milestone is just another landmark in a series of triumphs paving the way for Facebook. The sprawling social network shows no sign of stopping its breakneck progress and hopes are high that it will be on the forefront of new and exciting innovations not only for social networking, but for the future of the Internet as a whole. Happy 10th birthday Facebook!
