Whether you’ve read the book or watched the HBO TV series, George R.R. Martin’s conjured world of epic proportions had undoubtedly sucked you in. If you want something to tide you over till the third season of the series premieres on HBO or till the sixth book is written, you may want to check out Disruptor Beam’s game on Facebook.
Game of Thrones Ascent is a new Facebook game that recently launched its open beta. It puts you smack in the middle of Westeros, the setting for the whole A Song of Ice and Fire series.
The game is a richly blended text adventure/role playing game similar to Zynga’s Mafia Wars. While Game of Thrones viewers may be disappointed in the lack of real in-game action, fans of the book series will be handsomely rewarded with well-thought out dialogue and stunning graphics that make the game feel authentic and true to the envisioned world of Westeros.
The prologue lets players customize their character heavily. With options for basic things like name and gender to intriguing back stories and alignment, the prologue completely envelopes players to the rich world of Westeros. After learning the basics, it will be time to swear loyalty to a major House: Baratheon, Lannister, Stark, Greyjoy, or Targaryen.
The game is divided into several chapters, much like a real book. It follows the same storyline as the series does and thus, everything begins with the events in the first book, A Game of Thrones. Players must then choose which path to take through richly woven plots and intriguing scenarios.
As for the gameplay mechanics, hire sworn swords to do your bidding, fortify your holdings, make allegiances, smite enemies and vie for the Iron Throne. The options for going forward in Game of Thrones Ascent are practically limitless.
For the social aspect of the game, there are favors and boons to share with friends, alliances to be made, marriage pacts, betrothals, and even competition all for the sake of advancing your standing for the right to the Iron Throne.
A word of caution though, the game is currently still in its Beta stage, or its incubating stage. The game still has a lot of bugs and flaws, but it works! There are a lot of down times and lag issues but hopefully, they’ll be resolved once the game leaves beta. Besides, this is just to tide us over till Game of Thrones return on March 31.
All in all, Disruptor Beam offers a solid game on the form of Game of Thrones Ascent. Fans of the series will be thrilled for the chance to fight or to ally with Facebook friends for the crown and glory. Immerse yourself in the lore of Westeros, construct your holdings and fight for the right to rule in this amazing Facebook game.
