Players decided which new token will be featured but similarly, which token will get axed.
After a worldwide vote that captured the attention of more than 120 countries, the results are in. The cat will join the ranks of icons forever immortalized as one of Monopoly’s tokens. Sadly, it was the iron who got eliminated and will now be phased out from Monopoly games.
The cat has received immense popularity from their wide use in Internet memes. Lolcats come to mind. It is perhaps because of this that the graceful feline was able to edge out the competition and secure the spot as one of Monopoly’s game pieces. It will now be joining the ranks of the race car, Scottie dog, shoes, thimble, top hat, wheelbarrow, and battleship as one of the game pieces of this classic game.
The change in the game pieces was a result of Internet chatter in the Monopoly fanpage. The voting has also sparked Internet and Facebook campaigns to save the tokens and game pieces everyone wants to be retained or to be introduced.
