4 Privacy Settings You Should Not Think Twice To Implement

November 11, 2009

There are 4 privacy settings which is a must have for all you Facebook users.

Before we go on discussing with it, If you have not yet organized your friends and people on your networks, you better have it done first. Keeping your friends organize in the first place will help you a lot in whatever things you do in Facebook. Privacy settings is easy to use and is more effective only if you can effectively segregate your friends or people in your networks into the right groups.

Assuming that you have rightly organized your groups let’s look at the 4  privacy settings that you should not even think twice to implement, as the title of the post suggests.

1. Secure Your Contact Information

Do you like to be pestered with unwanted calls or mails from unknown person. We really cannot possibly imagine all the different ways some one can make use of once they get your contact information. Unwanted calls, spam mails, marketing calls and mails etc can make your life hell, if your personal contact information falls into the wrong hands. So, make sure keep your Contact Information secure.

Go to “Settings”, select “Privacy Settings” options and the “Contact Information” tab.

Make sure you customize all the fields. The best way is to select the “Custom” option. Then, if you don’t want anybody to see any information select the option “Only Me”. If you want share your contact information to some of your friends, then select “Some Friends” option and in the text box that appears below it, type in the names or group names to whom you want to share.

2. Photos/Videos

If you don’t set any privacy while creating an album, it can be viewed by everyone on Facebook by default. So, setting album privacy settings is very important. Have a separate album for different occasions. Put your head while organizing the photos and make sure to list out which album can be view by which group of your friends in your network. Once you are done with it, start setting your privacy settings. You can also set the privacy setting while creating an album itself.

When you deny some one from viewing a particular album, the person will not be able to see even the stories published on your wall when you create the particular album.

So, it is time to head to your photo privacy settings. Go to Photos page and select the “My Photos” then “Album Privacy”. In the following page, all your albums will be displayed with privacy settings option towards their right.

In the image above, the first album can be viewed by only those friends who are within the Family and Friends groups, while the second album can be viewed by all the people in my friends list except those that are under the group My blacklist. Using the “Customize” setting will allow you to be more specific with your privacy settings.

Videos privacy settings can be set in the same way, except that you have to set the privacy option for each videos individually.

3. Wall

Some people use Facebook just for fun, while others use it as a means for staying connected with people, and some use it for business purpose. Posts on your profile wall can be nice and fun. But there are some people who post whatever that comes to their mind. I am sure you wouldn’t want some goofy incident or a one-time something to be made public or let your colleagues at work know about all your personal life, which in turn can lead to uneasiness and embarrassment. Taking precautions and avoiding yourself from such sticky situation is better than trying to justify or explain misunderstandings. There are two steps involved in doing this. First one will be to control who can see the posts on your wall and the second one will be to control who can post on your wall. It will be of course mean to deny friends or people in your network to view or post on your profile wall, but there will always come along some people who will be just right for you to take up this measure.

From your profile wall click on “options” button located just below the “Share” button of your publisher. Click on the “Settings” button that comes out. Scroll down and you will see the option.

What i do here is, let my friends post on my wall. but i have denied the permission for certain people and groups to view my profile wall. So, whenever they comes to my profile page, they will not be able to view the comments made by your other friends.

You can deny other from posting on your wall. To do this remove the check from the “Friends may post to my wall” option. When deny postings on your wall, whenever a friend of your visits your profile, the publisher window through which some one can post on your wall will not be available.

4. Tagging

Tagging photos/videos can be fun, but getting yourself tagged in some infamous photos can really embarrass you.

Whenever you get tagged in a photo by a friends, the stories is published on his/her wall, your wall, and all the wall of your friends. So, a single fun activity can create a nuclear fission reaction and you know what next. Now, you cannot possibly ask or request all your friends not to tag you in their photos but you can do one thing, and that is control who can see the list of photos of you that you or your friends have tagged.

First of all go to your profile settings page. Under the “Basic” tab, you will see the following option.

Under the “Custom” option, select “Only Me” if you would like to keep all tagged photos private. If you would like to make tagged photos visible to certain friends or groups, you can choose to the “Some Friends” option and in the box that displays below you can type in either individual friends or friend lists. Do the same thing for the Videos “Tagged of You” option.

These 4 privacy settings can really really keep your life private in Facebook in comparison to a Facebook accounts with default settings.
