As the year is almost coming to an end, Facebook released it’s “Top Status Trends of 2010.”
1. HMU – It is the shorthand for “hit me up.” The acronym HMU was virtually unheard of in the early 2009. According to Facebook, in the early 2009 only a few posts a day contained HMU, and half of them were probably typos. Its use started to grow by May averaging about 20 posts a day and since had been roughly doubling every month and reached 1,600 posts a day by the end of 2009, which was far too modest to be on the last year’s list. However, HMU reached 80,000 mentions per day by the end of summer this year and quietly took the top place, which is the biggest surprise of the year.
2. World Cup – The Fifa World Cup is undoubtedly the biggest sporting event around the world and well it certainly deserved to be talk about.
3. Movies – Big movies like “Toy Story 3,” “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” “Inception,” “Alice in Wonderland” and “Iron Man 2″ were the five most discussed and also help secured the third place.
4. iPad and iPhone 4 – These two products reportedly combines to account for over 25 million bragging, lusting or the occasional condemning posts during the year.
5. Haiti – The Jan. 12 earthquake was widely felt and spread through status updates.
6. Justin Bieber – Bieber Fever still seems to be going strong. However, I believe, being able to bag the 6th place was a collective work of both his lovers and haters.
8. Mineros/Miner – The story of the 33 Chilean miners trapped underground for 69 days captivated the world.
9. Airplanes – Reportedly made the list due to the catchy lyrics of the international hit song “Airplanes.”
10. 2011 – You can reason this yourself
That’s the list of the top status trends of 2010.
Let’s hit them up one more time – ”Gotta catch an airplane with Bieber to make a 2011 movie on the Haiti earthquake and the Chilean miners. HMU on my iPhone 4 after the World Cup for some serious Facebook games.”
