What do you call this number, 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000?
Stop counting the zeroes… it’s a 1 followed by 27 zeroes??
I am also not sure because i seldom think past billion
.
Well, as a matter of fact no one does as of now. Currently, the highest prefix allowed by the International System of Units (SI), i found after doing some research, is the “yotta”, for 24 zeroes.
A number with 27 zeroes….
“Let’s call it “Hella”, because it’s a hell of a number. Right?”
A campaign for “hella” to join the likes of “kilo”, “mega”, “giga” and “tera” as an internationally accepted prefix is attracting growing support.
According to a report by Telegraph, the campaign started in California – where the word ‘hella’ is a slang for ‘many’.
“The analysis of many physical phenomena reveals natural quantities in excess of 27 orders of magnitude, a number which is currently ignored by the SI system,” wrote group founder Austin Sendek on the Facebook online petition outlining the case for the hella.
More than 20,000 people including scientists and students have signed up.
Most existing SI prefixes are either derived from Latin or Greek words for numbers, a trend that the SI system committee will be keen to continue. Even if the need for a new prefix was accepted, it is not quite sure that “hella” will be listed among the ones given below.
