Christmas gift giving drove the monthly active users of Facebook’s mobile apps pass the 300 million mark.
A recent report by Benedict Evans of Enders Analysis, suggests that Facebook saw the number of monthly active users accessing its mobile applications pass the 300 million mark, with iOS and Android applications accounting for more than two-thirds of mobile application use on Facebook.
The report attributed the rise in these numbers to the rush of Christmas gift giving, with Android and iOS devices among the most coveted gift this year. As further evidence of the hot holiday season for Android, a key Google executive said more than 3.7 million Android devices were activated over the Christmas holiday.
It is worth mentioning that Facebook claimed its mobile user base had crossed the 350 million mark in September 2011. Out of these, 250 million users were accessing the service through apps, while the rest were accessing the service browsers.
Evans deduces that 70% of mobile users and more than 30% of all users used apps to access Facebook.
“Next year Facebook will treat that user base as less of a mobile extension to the desktop experience and more as the core product – starting with advertising,” he added.
