Facebook announced a new feature, Download Your Information that will allow users take their Facebook information with them. Users can now download all their information.
This feature is built on top of Facebook’s Graph API and pulls down photos, videos and posts into a compressed zip file.
Facebook’s policy didn’t allow users to create a permanent copy of their information, due to risk of users taking their info and migrating to another service. But, it seems like the company feel it has established itself well and doesn’t feel threatened by it. Moreover, it’s in the interest of its users, such a feature is being rolled out. Or maybe, it is just a bid by Facebook to boost its public image and counter criticism to its policies.
Apart from photos and videos, I don’t see much reason why most users will want to keep a copy of their wall post.
The feature will be available from today. Share with us whether or why you will keep a local copy of your Facebook information.
