Last February 11, 2010, Zynga has acquired the fellow gaming studio, Serious Business. We all know Zynga as the San Francisco-based Facebook social gaming giant that is responsible for games that achieved worldwide fame such as Mafia Wars, Café World, and Farmville.
Also San Francisco-based gaming company, Serious Business was co-founded by Alex Le and Siqi Chen on February 1, 2008. Its flagship game on Facebook named Friends for Sale, currently has almost six million monthly active users and continues to be in the Top 25 Games List. (To play click HERE.) Aside from Friends for Sale, they also have two other Facebook Applications titled Rock Legends with almost 800 thousand monthly users (click HERE to play) and Happy Hour with over 13,000 monthly users (click HERE to play).
Though a deal has been made, the financial aspects of it were not disclosed to the public. It seems that the acquisition is part of Zynga’s strategic conquest to further develop and bring in more experience to the social gaming context. The purchase will eventually lead to the expansion of available games both on the social network, and on mobile phones and devices.
Vish Makhijani, Zynga’s Chief Operating Officer, was ecstatic in saying that they are very excited upon gaining an experienced team such as Serious Business. He also added that they were actually very impressed with Serious Business’ attitude when it comes to work, as well as with their speed in innovating social games.
December of last year, 21 new game trademarks were filed by Zynga. Now, the company has made this acquisition. So, we are definitely looking at more Facebook social games this year!
