February 10, 2010

Facebook AOL 300x178 Facebook In AIMs Buddy ListWhile Google had been unveiling it new product  Google Buzz, AOL and Facebook have been shaking hands on the other side.

Hours after Google released Google Buzz, the newly-single AOL Inc. released a new version of its instant messaging client that integrate social media features into its AOL Instant Messanger, by integrating Facebook Chat into AIM.

This partnership will allow AIM users to chat with their Facebook friends, who will also become part of AIM’s “Buddy” lists, through their AIM accounts. New feeds and “wall” posts can be imported to AIM while status updates, videos, links and photos can be exported to Facebook.

AOL is the first major instant messaging service to integrate with Facebook Chat’s new interface. If you want to try it out, you’ll need to download the latest AIM beta for windows or Mac, or use the web version AIM Express Beta 7.2.

Once a user signs into AIM, he or she can click the ‘Facebook Connect’ button at the top of the buddy list to set up Facebook chat, AOL said. When that’s completed, Facebook friends will be added to buddy lists, and can be chatted with.

“To help you keep on top of your social network, we’ve added Lifestream to the Mail AIM plug-in. Lifestream not only allows you to get updates from all your social networks, but also to easily publish your status and broadcast it to your Buddies,” AOL wrote in its blog.

The staggering usage growth of Facebook continues unabated as the company achieves yet another milestone – 100 million U.S. unique visitor in November. Accoridng to comScore, this is the first time the social networking site has exceeded that monthly mark.

Just recently, Aol celebrated its re-emergence as an independently-traded company. It was the fourth largest Website in the U.S. until last month. Comscore data for November, 2009 shows that Facebook went past Aol with 102.9 million unique visitors in the U.S., against Aol’s 99.7 million. The other leaders are Microsoft, Yahoo, and Google with 130, 160 and 168 million U.S. visitors respectively.

On a global basis, Facebook already passed Aol back in Febuary 2009 to become the fouth largest site worldwide. With the current pace of Facebook, it might not take long to catch up Microsoft, Yahoo, or Google.

How long do you guys think Facebook will take to become the largest Website in U.S.?
