Facebook app

Facebook users, be ready to welcome a new app that will allow you to share large files on Facebook.

According to Gigaom, a new app called Pipe, beta, will be coming to Facebook on Monday.

With the app, you will now be able to transfer large files, up to 1GB in size, as Facebook attachments.

The app uses Adobe’s Real Time Media Protocol Flow (RTMFP) communication protocol, that was originally designed for communication between Flash and AIR apps. File transfer will not go through Facebook or Pipe’s servers, but will be loaded into the recipient’s cache.

Gigaom pointed that “RTMFP isn’t technically supposed to be used for file transfer, according to Adobe’s own documentation, but that’s what Pipe is using it for anyway”

When files are transferred through the Pipe app, the recipients will see Facebook chat messages with links to the application and an explainer video. They must install the app in order to receive the file.

Pipe only supports peer-to-peer support i.e. only one-to-one user.

fb videochat rounds 300x103 Rounds Introduces Random Chat FeatureRounds, a social entertainment platform on Facebook, that was launched around 6 months back has now surpassed 350,000 monthly active users, and will be expected to gain more in the future with the latest update.

The latest update introduces Random Rounds and a number of games to its library. With the new Random Rounds feature, instead of just calling a friend, members can now pick any game or activity and enjoy it by themselves or with someone totally new.

Rounds has taken a number of precautions to tackle concerns like matching a 12-year-old girl with a 45-year-old man. There is no anonymity in Rounds as your name and user profile are clearly presented during chats. Users are also need to have over 100 friends to participate in Random Rounds, to discourage users from creating new accounts just to do dirty things. The system is also smart enough not to make inappropriate matches like the concern mentioned above.

Some of the cool features of the app includes video chats, take snapshots of each other, use webcam effects, watch Youtube videos simultaneously, play multi-player games, browse websites like Facebok, google Maps, Flickr etc right from the Rounds app environment.

If you haven’t check out this app, try it. It has been around since August 2010.

Want to know who viewed your Facebook profile?

Sorry again. Such apps don’t exist.

Scammers have used different variants of Facebook apps to tap into users’ curiosity about who might be viewing their profile on Facebook.

The latest app using this scheme comes with the message:

“OMG OMG OMG… I cant believe this actually works! Now you really can see who viewed your profile! on [LINK].”

Most users already know the Facebook doesn’t allow such apps according to their policy, and such apps are only scams. But, according to Sophos, more than 60,000 people clicked into the trap in a few hours, which I believed gives enough reason to share this post again with you.

Such application will redirect users to ad-filled pages or trick users into taking up surveys. The app will also start generating several newsfeeds on your wall and trick more people from your network into the scam.

If you have been hit by such scam apps, remove the app and all references to the app from your newsfeed.

If you need help, check out our post on how to remove rouge applications.

The latest security threat to hit Facebook is a malicious application that spreads quickly by enticing users to create their own app that then inadvertently clones one of the template spam applications.

This rogue app, is said to come in many variants of “Who is checking your profile?” and has hit Facebook with improved technique as compared to previous attacks seen on Facebook.

The application is said to trick users into propagating the exploit by creating a brand new Facebook application that hands over the controls to the bad guys. This way, with so many clones, it will be harder for Facebook to block the malicious app.

WebSense’s blog says, “The attack starts with a friend, whom you trust, posting a link on your wall, asking you who is checking your profile. It also entices you by telling you that your friend is viewing your profile.”

Making fake “who view your profile” applications have come and gone many times on Facebook. So, the rogue app is said to ask users to create their own Facebook application, which i suppose will be a cool thing for most people. When the user enters their application’s API, the new application is used to clone one of the template spam applications, each with a different name and icon to entice more users.

Some other malicious application(might be the clones) that are;  Who Block me?, Who is in your mind?, Who stalks your profile?, Who Always Look into My Album?? etc.. Well, they all really looked enticing right?

Most fake apps are reported so in the application page by users. So, it is always a good practice to check out the application page and read the reviews, rather than just allowing and giving controls to the such applications.

Applications that are “who view your ….” type are not one to be trusted. Neither should they be trusted today nor in the days to come. Facebook policy doesn’t allow apps with such capability. So, never trust such apps, spread the word and keep your online community safe.
