fb CityVille logo 300x240 CityVille Amasses More Players Than FarmVille

Zynga’s CityVille has climb up to the number one spot on app leaderboard so fast, I am sure, that even Zynga must have been surprised.

CityVille has now edged pass Zynga’s own number one game Farmville in about 3 weeks after its launched.

According to data from AppData, FarmVille has 56.6 million active users with 16.3 million daily active users, while CityVille has 61 million monthly active users with 16.7 million daily active users.

Beside Cityville and FarmVille, zynga also holds two more spots in the top five with FrontierVille and Texas HoldEm Poker. Mafia Wars has been losing active players over the last few months but still holds a place in the top 10.

CityVille’s future success was well expected, but it’s is very impressive to see how it amassed all those players in just a matter of few weeks.

It is true all social games eventually settle and start seeing drop-offs. FarmVille’s all time high was more than 83 million monthly active users. How soon will CityVille top that? And how long will CityVille rule? Those are yet to be seen.

In the meantime, it’s just happy times for Zynga.

The new Application Settings dashboard announced by Facebook on Wednesday promises to give users more visibility and control.
This new feature will be rolled out to all the users by next week. Through the dashboard, users will be able to see which applications have what permissions as well as when and what the applications are accessing. You can edit your permissions given to those applications.

Here is a quick look on the new Application Settings dashboard. You can also check it out through this link: Application Settings dashboard.

You will see that the dashboard list all the apps, games and websites you have installed. It will be listed according to when they were last used. Click on any listed app and it will expand to show when you last used the app, what permissions the app has, and information on the data accessed by the app.

To the right of the permissions granted to the app, you will see some remarks/option like “required” or “remove”. You can revoke those permissions that have a remove option, while the permission that has a “required” remark cannot be removed.

You can mostly revoke privileges like posting on your wall or email privilege granted to an app. On the other hand, almost all apps will requires permission to access your data info and your friends’ to work, which will be marked so. You will not be able to remove such permissions. If you don’t like the app accessing you profile data, you have to remove the app itself by clicking on the “Remove application” link in the expanded view or by clicking on the “X” located to the far right of an application, in the unexpanded view.

You can view what kind of data the application accessed by clicking on the “See details” option. The access log will show you when and what data the app last accessed. If the access log of a particular app doesn’t contain any info on accessed data, “See details” option will not be present.

That pretty much sums up the things in the Application Settings dashboard.

This added visibility will encourage developers to access and use user data more responsibly. It will also help users determine which apps are worth keeping and which apps to say goodbye.

Sometimes we find our feeds swamped by notices from various games our Facebook friends play, that we no longer see important information about them. For those of us who do not play those games that they play, these notices are nuisances.

So what can we do so these do not keep showing up on our news feeds? Follow these instructions:

  1. Hover your mouse over the type of notice that you do not want to see. On the right side of that notice, the word “Hide” will appear.
  2. Click that word.
  3. A pop-up will appear where the notice was. Click on the middle button that says “Hide [application name]”. You will no longer get notices from that application.

Eventually, if you wish to see these notices back (like when you start playing that game) you can:

  1. Go to the upper right hand of your screen where you will see “Account”.
  2. Click on the down arrow then go to “Application Settings”. A list of all applications you used will come up.
  3. Click on “Edit Settings” found on the same row of the application you are concerned with. A pop-up will appear.
  4. Click on the tab “Additional Permissions”.
  5. Put a check mark on “Publish recent activity (one line stories) to my wall”.
  6. Click “Okay”.

In contrast, some notices come up because we used the application. Although we no longer use these applications, these still post notices on our News Feeds. To totally disconnect our Facebook accounts from these applications, go back to the list of applications as instructed above:

  1. Instead of clicking “Edit Settings”, click on the x mark. A pop-up will appear confirming if you want to continue with the removal of the application.
  2. Click “Remove”.

Do not let those notices overwhelm you. You have control over what you want to see on your Facebook homepage.
