A Taiwanese woman gave a running commentary to her friends through Facebook chat while she was suffocating herself to death.

Claire Lin, 31, committed suicide by inhaling poisonous fumes. She was reportedly upset as her boyfriend failed to return home on her 31st birthday.

Police said her final Facebook entries show her chatting with nine friends, describing her gradual asphyxiation.

A picture uploaded from her mobile phone shows a charcoal barbecue burning next to two stuffed animals. Another shows the room filled with fumes.

While her online friends pleaded not to kill herself and to put out the charcoal fire, and some reportedly tried to track her down to stop her, none of them called police.

Her final words were: “Too late. My room is filled with fumes. I just posted another picture. Even while I’m dying, I still want FB (Facebook). Must be FB poison. Haha.”

As anticipated, Facebook introduced a new messaging platform that combines SMS, chat, e-mail and Facebook Messages.

The new system announced today, simplify the process of correspondence – simply click on a friend’s face, type a message and hit enter. On top of that, there are no subject lines, no cc or bcc. So, all the messages you exchanged with someone is simplified into a single thread.

Users will also able to get a @facebook.com email address.

Facebook’s new email service was anticipated by many as something that will be a Gmail killer seems a little overhyped.

According to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, this new system is not an e-mail killer by a messaging system that includes e-mail as a part of it, and doesn’t expect people to shut down their other mail accounts.

Personally, I think I might use Facebook’s new messaging system more, but my old emails will be visited and used as usual. What is your take on this new messaging platform?

fb chat Facebook Will No Longer Support IE 6 Starting September 15Facebook Chat has grown as one of the most widely-used service on Facebook since it was launched two years ago.

However, many users came across problem with the service, with chat dropping out at times, or not working at all at times.

Facebook have been working hard on these issues and reported today that its chat feature will no longer support Internet Explorer 6 (IE 6).

Users will have their time to think about upgrading to IE 8, Firefox or Google Chrome. Facebook intends to pull the plug off IE 6 starting September 15.

IE 6 is 9 years old. So, it’s ability to support newer features have been a problem. More than 72 companies joined the “IE 6 no more” campaign last August.

Though many internet users still rely on IE 6, Google dropped support for IE 6 from Google Apps and many YouTube features earlier this year. And even Microsoft is asking its users to switch to newer version. Facebook might be able to give the final push with their decision to drop IE 6.

Facebook Chat is expected to get significant upgrades over the coming weeks for better chat experience. According to the company’s blog,

The biggest improvements come from changes that aren’t supported on older web browsers. After evaluating the alternatives, we’ve decided to make rapid improvements and provide the best Chat experience possible, which means we will no longer support Internet Explorer 6 browsers.

So, if you are still using IE 6, maybe it’s time to move on.

Hours after Google released Google Buzz, the newly-single AOL Inc. released a new version of its instant messaging client that integrate social media features into its AOL Instant Messanger, by integrating Facebook Chat into AIM.

This partnership will allow AIM users to chat with their Facebook friends, who will also become part of AIM’s “Buddy” lists, through their AIM accounts. New feeds and “wall” posts can be imported to AIM while status updates, videos, links and photos can be exported to Facebook.

AOL is the first major instant messaging service to integrate with Facebook Chat’s new interface. If you want to try it out, you’ll need to download the latest AIM beta for windows or Mac, or use the web version AIM Express Beta 7.2.

Once a user signs into AIM, he or she can click the ‘Facebook Connect’ button at the top of the buddy list to set up Facebook chat, AOL said. When that’s completed, Facebook friends will be added to buddy lists, and can be chatted with.

“To help you keep on top of your social network, we’ve added Lifestream to the Mail AIM plug-in. Lifestream not only allows you to get updates from all your social networks, but also to easily publish your status and broadcast it to your Buddies,” AOL wrote in its blog.
