Three murders, several violent assaults, and incorrect information spelled chaos and almost doom for a Philadelphia man.
According to the ABC news, the Philadelphia police have been on the hunt for a man since November in connection to at least three murders and other violent assault in the Kensington neighborhood. Apparently, someone distributed fliers bearing the man’s name, address, and photo in the neighborhood where the residents were living on the edge.
The flyer found its way to a Facebook group called “Catch the Kensington Strangler, before he catches someone you love,” which apparently had around 8000 members, where 24-year-old Triz Jefferies was labeled as the Kensington strangler.
Well-meaning vigilantes rallied around his house Monday night, calling him the “Kensington strangler,” forcing the scared man to flee.
The terrified and misidentified man called the police requesting them to take him to the special victims unit and also submitted to DNA test, which finally cleared him off the case.
Police are investigating the people behind the false information.
So far, three murders have been linked to the Kensinton strangler, and a reward of $30K has been offered by the Philadelphia authorities for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved.
I am sharing this news because this news got me thinking real hard about the advantages and disadvantages of people taking up responsibilities to fight crime through the site. Do you think there should be some kind of policing such groups on Facebook?
