Facebook Information

The United States Federal Trade Commission and the Social Intelligence Corporation gives you another reason to watch what you post on Facebook.

Last week, the United States Federal Trade Commission have given the Social Intelligence Corporation, a startup that does background checks for companies via social media, the legal thumbs up to archive seven years worth of your Facebook activities.

According to Forbes, Social Intelligence Corporation stores anything it sees about an individual on Facebook or Twitter or other social media site, and keeps it on file for seven years.

One report of an applicant that has been sent to employer, share with Forbes by Social Intelligence, indicated the applicant as a racist because he had joined a Facebook Club called “I shouldn’t have to press 1 for English. We are in the United States. Learn the language.”  Another applicant was found to have pictures on their social media profile with many guns and a sword.

You may be every bit of the perfect candidate for a job, but a couple of post or photos meant as a joke can turn around and hit you hard. Not only that, with the way Facebook is, and how people use it, it is very easy for misinformation to be linked to you as you never know when you fun-loving friends in your network adds you to a potentially illegal or embarassing Group or tags you in a photo.

Maintaining a clean online image on social sites like Facebook can be troublesome – that too 7 years, honestly, it scares me. But, you can at least do your bit to be on the safe side by making use of the privacy settings on who can and who cannot post or comment on your page apart from the judgement that you should use while posting or sharing something online. Whether you online info will come back to haunt you or not will depend a lot on how you.
