Facebook has begun rolling out update for its photo viewer that displays comments and ads on the right side of the photo.

The new photo viewer looks very much like the one Google+ currently offers, and some are saying it’s a rip off Google+.

Up till now, comments and ads were shown beneath photos. The new update brings the comments on the right side of the photo, followed by ads. The ads are pushed down as comments on the photo grows. The option for “tagging” and adding “location” appears on the top of the right hand section whenever applicable.

Have you ever flagged a photo on Facebook as ‘offensive’? If so, did you feature in an unflattering way in the image?

While you ponder over the answer, here is what Facebook has to say. The networking site revealed that, during 2011, the majority of photos flagged as ‘offensive’ by users were actually ones they were embarrassed about.

Now, does that answers your problem with Facebook about not taking any actions regarding the photo you flagged?

When Facebook investigates an ‘offensive’ post, it will take it down only if it proves to be genuinely offensive.

The company reveals to the NPR  that no matter how much you dislike a photo, it won’t take it down  simply because you don’t like the image for vanity reasons.

Facebook will take down offensive photos even if someone doesn’t report it – when terms and conditions are not followed – but won’t delete unwanted photos even if someone flags it. It’s up to the uploaders to decide.

So, why don’t we cut the guys some slack and work out the issues of unflattering photos among ourselves, and let the guys work on some other genuine problems of ours like login or account problems instead? With over 800 million users and 250 million photos being posted on the site every day….well, don’t you think those guys need some break? Just my though!

Do not think your secrets are safe from a person once you defriend them on Facebook.

Richard Leon Barton Jr. thought so, but learnt it the hard way.

The 34-year-old Michigan man was arrested for polygamy, after he posted wedding photos of his second marriage after defriending his first wife on Facebook.

According to The Grand Rapids Press, Barton met his first wife online and married her in 2004. But they quickly became estranged after Barton was taken back to Michigan and imprisoned for violating his parole and the couple fell out of touch.

They eventually reconnected on Facebook about a year ago after Barton’s release. But, Barton abruptly ended their online friendship.

Wife no. 1 became suspicious and began snooping around still-public sections of his Facebook page and discovered photos of Barton’s marriage.

Barton reportedly told wife no. 2 that he was divorced.

Wife no. 1 somehow managed to communicate with Barton and convinced him to file for divorce – and eventually contacted authorities when he failed to do so.

Barton, who claimed that he thought he signed divorce papers in 2007, has been charged with polygamy, a four-year felony.

Social photo discovery engine – Pixable, revealed that Facebook photo archive will cross the 100 billion photos mark by end of summer.

The estimate was made basing on the current growth pattern. Facebook currently has more than 600 million registered users and hosts about 60 billion photos, and about 6 billion photos are uploaded to the website each month.

By analyzing photos uploaded to Facebook, Pixable also came out with a very interesting infographic shown below. Among other highlights, Pixable says that women upload twice as many images as men, and get tagged in pictures twice as much.

In a rare incident, a nurse saved the life of a two-year-old by spotting cancer from the youngster’s photo.

Nicola Sharp was browsing through her friend Michele Freeman’s photos on Facebook when she noticed her friend’s daughter had a white pupil instead of the the usual ‘red eye’ effect people have in photographs.

As a nurse, Ms Sharp knew that it could indicate an eye tumor. She contacted her friend immediately and two-year-old Grace was diagnosed and treated for retinoblastoma.

Although Grace lost her sight in her left eye, medical professionals and Ms Freeman believe that Ms. Sharp’s knowlege and action have saved the youngster’s life.

Retinoblastoma is a rare form of eye cancer that develops in the retina. Around 50 people are diagnosed with it each year in the UK.

Bigger is better, when it comes to viewing photos. As promised back at the end of January, Facebook announced on its blog that it’s finally started increasing the maximum size for photos on Facebook.

Example of 604 pix and 720 pix photo

There is an increase in the size of photos by almost 20%. Previously, the maximum size on photos were set at 604 pixels. Now, the size is increase to 720 pixels which translates to bigger and higher quality photos.

As usual, this larger photo size is being launched gradually over the next few days, some lucky Facebookers have already seen the difference, while the rest have to wait for few days.

A note to remember is, photos that have been already uploaded before will remain the same. Only new photos uploaded after the change occurs in your account will see the effect. So, it’s entirely up to you to delete and upload your old photos again if you want them at 720 pix.

Facebook blog also warns that uploads made from some external applications may continue to use the previous size. So, take this into account too before you start fuming and getting upset icon smile Upload Bigger Photos On Facebook With New Photo Limit .

For Facebook, this move will increase the company’s already massive storage costs, but let’s assume that this is a cost Facebook is happy to take on and give us (Facebookers) better service.

Many of you might not know that there is also a cap on the number of photos uploaded in a particular album. Previously, Facebook had a cap of 60 photos in any one album. That limit was increased to 200 last spring.

Anyway, this is not a photo uploading contest rite..? I hope you guys will enjoy this new move of increasing the max pixel limit.

Enjoy yourself!!!
