In view of the recent news about 100 million Facebook profile being leaked, we would like to bring to you a short tutorial on how to exclude yourself from such situation.

The profile data that were leak were actually nothing new. All the information is already available if one searches it. The listed users are those who have not bothered to remove themselves from being listed on public search engines.

Here is a quick How To:

1. Log in to your Facebook Account.

2. Select the Privacy Settings options from the Accounts tab.

3. At the bottom of the following page, you will find the settings for ‘Applications and Websites’. Click on the ‘Edit your settings’ link.

4. On the following page, you will find a ‘public search’ at the bottom of the list. Click on the ‘Edit Settings’ button located at the far right side.

5.  Now you’ll see a description of the public search settings and at the bottom of the description, ‘Enable public search’ with a check box in front of it.

Uncheck the option and congratulations, “you have just removed yourself from public search.”

Many of you may have already read a lot on privacy settings in Facebook or might have played around with the privacy settings. Many of you might not have done it so far. This tutorial will focus on the privacy settings of your profile. Hope that it will help everyone who reads this tutorial.

Profile Privacy Settings

To go to your profile settings, select the “Settings” option available just near the “Logout” option at the top of the page. Then select “Privacy Settings.” In the following page you will see the options to go to your profile, search, news feed and wall, and applications settings.

Click on the “Profile” option. This is the most important setting that you will set for your Facebook account. Under this option you can select or do minute settings for all the different information about yourself and your account. Once you enter the Profile Settings page, under the “Basic” tab, you will see a lot of fields.  All the fields will have a drop-down list towards their right side from where you can select a preset setting or customize. Different fields may have different options available to the user. Generally, the following options will be available to the user as shown in the image below. Some fields may have all of them while some will have only a part of those setting options.

1. Everyone: This setting makes your information very transparent. Anyone on Facebook will be able to see the field wherever you select this option.
2. Friends of Friends: Using this settings will allow the friends of mutual friends to see the particular field for which the option was selected.
3. Only Friends: This setting will ensures that only those people who are your friends will be able to see the information of the field.
4. Only Me: Using this option will not allow anyone to see the information of the field for which it is selected.
5. Customize: This setting will allow you to put exceptions to particular people or a group of friends. Whenever you select this setting, a new setting dialog will appear which will look like the image below. Select your desired setting and under the “Except these people” section, type in the name of the friend/s, or friend group for whom you want to set an exception.

To exclude only a few people, you can choose either of the first three options under the Friends section and type the name of the friend/s or the group name/s whom you want to exclude. To grant access to only a few people, you can choose the “Only Me” option, and type the name of the friend/s or group name/s to whom you want to grant access to your information.

Save the changes once you are done.

Next, go to the “Contact Information” tab, and set your desired settings for your contact information.

Now, your profile information will be displayed to all those to whom you have granted access.
