Facebook has quietly added a new item in the family relation list allowing soon-to-be parents to announce to their friends that they are expecting complete with due date and chosen name.

The update in a user’s profile will not create a profile page of the unborn child, but the status will appear on the expectant parent’s profile page under Family.

Expecting parents can now share the news on Facebook by editing their profile settings.

Here are the steps for those who need help:

1. In your profile page, click on “Edit Settings”

2. On the page that loads, select “Friends and Family” from the list of options available on the left side of the page.

3. Go down to the ‘Family’ section and click on ‘Add another family member’. You will find the “Expected: child” option listed in the drop down menu. Select it and add the necessary information and save the changes, and you are done.

An update will be published in your newsfeed informing your friends about the bundle of joy you are expecting.

Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, who has been dating his girlfriend Priscilla Chan since college finally, made his relationship official – the Facebook way – by updating his Facebook status to ‘in a relationship’

According to Time magazine reports, Zuckerberg updated his relationship on March 20 saying it was “slightly overdue.”

This comes on the heels of a Facebook page the pair created for their Hungarian sheepdog, Beast.

The report suggests that either Zuckerberg is feeling the pressure to follow his motto of “trying to make the world a more open place” or an engagement announcement is on the way.

Facebook apart from what it is meant to be – a social networking place, can be used by people for and against crimes.

A college student used it against, and managed to thwart an armed robbery.

Nitesh Bhakta spotted masked burglars in his living room. He slipped into the attic when the gun-wielding burglars were tying up his grandmother and sister.

He grabbed his laptop as he slipped into the attic, and updated his status with an SOS message, “HELP, ROBBERS, NO PHONE”. He reportedly left his cell phone back in Athens, and was unable to call for help.

Most of his friends too his message as a joke, but his best friend John Salter didn’t, and immediately called the Bartow County Sheriff’s Department.

The miscreants took off when they heard the sirens. Police manage to nab one of them, and the remaining two wouldn’t be out for long, as they reportedly dropped their cell phones at the scene.

And that is how, with the right tools and some loyal friends, one can turn tables on misfortunes

A Pennsylvania teen has admitted to raping an intoxicated woman, and to soliciting murder on Facebook.

Corey Christian Adams, a 19-year old from West Chester was arrested last July after a woman accused him of raping her following a party. The victim confronted Adams about the incident and the accused, in turn, went to Facebook seeking a hitman.

“I got 500 on a girls head who wants that bread?” Adams wrote in one status. “Hit me up anyway possible.”

Borough Detective Stan Billie, who was on Adam’s case, offered his services posing as a potential hitman. Adam allegedly set up a meeting with the undercover agent but didn’t keep up with it. However, according to the detective, the accused updated his status saying he “needed this girl knocked off right now.” In addition, officers investigating the allegations against Adams found DNA evidence linking him to the rape.

The accused eventually admitted that the status updates were directed at the victim and has accepted a plea bargain. He now faces 11 to 22 years in state prison.

A band of tech-savvy burglars in New Hampshire proved yet again to watch what you post on Facebook or other social networking sites.

According to a report on the Nashua Telegraph, police believe that a group of burglars in Nashua, New Hampshire have been using Facebook to pick out victim’s home through clues from user’s status updates. The gang strike the target homes mostly during day time when the owners were out.

The gang is believed to have stolen goods worth $100,000 to $200,000, including ammunition, elctronics, and fireworks from a series of burglaries.

Three men have been identified and charged in connection to 18 burglaries and police are searching for links to dozens more.

“Be careful of what you post on these social networking sites,” warns Capt. Ron Dickerson. “We know for a fact that some of these players, some of these criminals, were looking on these sites, and identifying their targets through these social networking sites.”

Have you ever heard of the concept of micro-blogging? Of course this sounds smaller than blogging and mini-blogging. Facebook introduced micro-blogging with the introduction of the feature called ‘Status Updates’.

Status Updates have become one of the most popular features in Facebook, and used by almost all the users. Status Updates enables the Facebook users to inform their friends about their thoughts, actions, and whereabouts. Speaking with personal experience, I usually read through almost all the status updates of friends whenever I login to Facebook.

Status Updates fall in to a few categories. First of all, it is an update about something you are engaged with currently. As an example, ‘Jen is listing to Akon’ is an update about what Jen is engaged with. Frequently, Status Updates are used to express thoughts such as ‘Billy is a total idiot’.In addition to that, many users use Status Updates for being funny and ironic such as ‘Sam thinks Obama should swear a few more times jut to be safe’.

When Status Update was originally implemented, Facebook prompted it with ‘<User’s Name> is…’ and the users filled the rest. These Status Updates appeared as ‘Tom is listing to silence’. By December 2007, Facebook removed the need of ‘is’ in the Facebook Status Updates. Although ‘is’ still appears by default, users can use the backspace key to delete it if they wish.

With the latest updates of Facebook (March 2009), the question for Status Updates, ‘What are you doing?’ was changed to ‘What’s on your mind?’.
