Social media has become a part and parcel of the online community. With almost half of global internet users devotedly engaging with social media sites, it is definitely okay to know some nerdy stuff, if you should call it, about these sites. Even the activities that takes place on these sites in a minute is mind blowing.

A graphic design blog, compiled an infographic “Statistics Of Top 5 Social Media Sites” that include Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Reddit and StumbleUpon.

Would have loved to see LinkedIn and the rising Pinterest. Still, the infographic is heavily laden with data, cool graphics, and a very nice selection of the stats too. Enjoy it!

What is stopping Facebook users from buying much on Facebook? Security concerns.

The same type of concerns people had when online stores first came up. And even though social commerce is expected to reach $30 billion within five years, people are still hesitant.

Harris Interactive did a survey on behalf of Dititas last month, polling 2,630 U.S. adults aged 18 years and older, of which 2,247 were social media users.

Some highlights of the survey infographic include:

  • 55 percent of social media users aren’t comfortable giving credit card information via social media, While the other 45 percent are at least somewhat comfortable doing so, especially men within the age group of 18-54 and having an income of $35,000 or more.
  • 20 percent of social media users agree that they would purchase products or services from their favorite brands on a social media site.
  • 34 percent of social media users agree that they’d be more likely to share info about a purchase they made on a social media site with friends than one made on a traditional e-commerce site.
  • 75 percent of social media users agree that they would be more likely to purchase a product or service that a friend openly endorses via social media, than ones that were “liked” or “followed”
  • 74 percent of social media users indicate that they would rather use an alternative payment method than use virtual currency, such as Bitcoin or Facebook Credits to pay for a purchase made on a social media site.

Christmas gift giving drove the monthly active users of Facebook’s mobile apps pass the 300 million mark.

A recent report by Benedict Evans of Enders Analysis, suggests that Facebook saw the number of monthly active users accessing its mobile applications pass the 300 million mark, with iOS and Android applications accounting for more than two-thirds of mobile application use on Facebook.

fb apps MAU Report: 300 Million Users Access Facebook Through Mobile Apps

The report attributed the rise in these numbers to the rush of Christmas gift giving, with Android and iOS devices among the most coveted gift this year. As further evidence of the hot holiday season for Android, a key Google executive said more than 3.7 million Android devices were activated over the Christmas holiday.

It is worth mentioning that Facebook claimed its mobile user base had crossed the 350 million mark in September 2011. Out of these, 250 million users were accessing the service through apps, while the rest were accessing the service browsers.

Evans deduces that 70% of mobile users and more than 30% of all users used apps to access Facebook.

“Next year Facebook will treat that user base as less of a mobile extension to the desktop experience and more as the core product – starting with advertising,” he added.

Social networking site Facebook is becoming a place of foul-mouthed users.

Social media monitoring service, Reppler scanned the Facebook walls of over 30,000 users, and found out that users just like to say the f-word on Facebook.

Stats provided by the monitoring service includes:

  • 47% of the users have profanity on their wall.
  • 80% of the users who have profanity on their Facebook wall have at least one post or comment with profanity from a friend.
  • 56% of the posts/comments with profanity on a user’s wall come from friends.
  • Users are twice as likely to use profanity in a post on their Facebook Wall than a comment. Whereas friends are twice as likely to use profanity in a comment on a user’s Facebook Wall, than a post.
  • The most common profane word is derivations of the “f-word”, followed by derivations of the word “sh*t”. “B*tch” comes a distant third.

According to Reppler, most of the profanity on a user’s Facebook Wall comes from foul-mouthed friends, which demonstrates that users don’t have complete control over the language used on their Facebook Wall, yet the language used by friends can have an impact on how others perceive them.

It is impossible to go around telling all your Facebook friends to stop cussing on your Wall, but you can always set who sees what part of your profile, if you don’t want to project the wrong image to potential recruiters.

Profanity exists on all social sites. Are you surprise by the amount of profanity that exists on Facebook?

A new study suggests that the more friends you have on Facebook, the more likely you are to feel stressed out by Facebook.

In a study from Edinburgh Napier University, psychologist quizzed around 200 students on their use of Facebook and concludes that, “for a significant number of users, the negative effects of Facebook outweigh the benefits of staying in touch with friends and family.”

Dr. Kathy Charles, who led the study points out a number of paradoxes that  resulted from the study.

“For instance, although there is great pressure to be on Facebook there is also considerable ambivalence amongst users about its benefits,” said Dr Charles.

“Our data also suggests that there is a significant minority of users who experience considerable Facebook-related anxiety, with only very modest or tenuous rewards.

“And we found it was actually those with the most contacts, those who had invested the most time in the site, who were the ones most likely to be stressed.”

Certain actions that Facebook users deal with regularly can also cause psychological strain. Rejecting friend request caused 32 per cent of the respondent to feel guilty. Maybe that is why, the survey shows that 63 per cent said they delay replying to friend request and 10 per cent admitted to dislike receiving friend request. While 12 per cent of the respondents who said that Facebook in general makes them feel anxious had an average of 117 friends, the remaining 88 per cent had an average of 75 friends.

“But many also told us they were anxious about withdrawing from the site for fear of missing important social information or offending contacts. Like gambling, Facebook keeps users in a neurotic limbo, not knowing whether they should hang on in there just in case they miss out on something good,” She added.
