In a major web scam, thousands of brides-to-be and wedding vendors were scammed through a site called The Boston 411.
The site invited would-be brides and potential sellers to a non-existent Spring Home and Bridal Show at the Hynes Convention Center at the weekend.
According to Associate press, around 6,000 people and vendors signed up, paid registration fees and bought floor space through the website, which promised elegant wedding displays, demonstrations and samples.
The scam came to light after sellers began calling the convention center regarding matters on the show exhibits.
One victim, Aram Orchanian, a wedding photographer reportedly lost nearly £2,000 to attend the show and to produce promotional materials.
He said he heard about the show on Facebook and called a telephone number listed on the fake website for more information before registering.
Those who discovered the event was not scheduled at the convention center were reportedly assured by a woman who answered the fake site’s phone that there had been a mix-up at the venue and would be resolved.
As expected, the website is no longer up and officials are investigating on it.
